The Supersonics leave Seattle

Blogged under General, Comings & Goings, Bloglockers, Big Supersonics News, Front Page by alleyoop on Tuesday 12 August 2008 at 7:51 pm

The Supersonics have left the city of Seattle to move to Oklahoma City. As part of the deal the city of Seattle gets to keep the team colors and name to allow the Sonics to break the lease early. I am a Cleveland Browns fan so I know how you feel. You will learn to hate Oklahoma City and you will feel exhilaration when the NBA returns to your city and it won’t even matter who the players are….as long as the front of the uniform says “Seattle Supersonics” on it.

2. (50) DeVon Hardin, C

The Sonics felt the need to draft another big man and that’s why they selected center DeVon Hardin out of California. The 22-year old has nice size at 6′11″, 250 pounds and he plays a big man’s game close to the basket. Hardin played in 101 games (80 starts) at California and he averaged 7.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, 0.4 assists and 1.3 blocked shots per game. Look for the Sonics to bring around Hardin slowly as they have time to let him develop.

1. (29) D.J. White, PF

The Supersonics acquired forward D.J. White from the Pistons for the rights to forward Walter Sharp and center Trent Plaisted. This was an excellent move for the Sonics as White can help them soon. He’s a true power forward at 6′9″, 251 pounds and he knows how to use his body to create good shots for himself as he shot 56.2% from the floor in his career with Indiana. White played in 99 games (97 starts) at Indiana and he averaged 14.6 points, 7.6 rebounds, 0.9 assists and 2.0 blocked shots per game. Look for White to earn his way into the playing rotation quickly for the Sonics.

1. (24) Serge Ibaka, PF

The Supersonics should quit picking players from Africa and start picking players from the United States. Ibaka is a 19-year old from the Congo who likely will be playing pro ball in Spain until at least the 2010-11 NBA season. He has played in 30 games (0 starts) in Spain and he has averaged 11.5 points, 8.3 rebounds, 0.3 assists and 2.9 blocked shots per game. This was a reach for the Sonics.

1. (4) Russell Westbrook, PG

The Supersonics probably could have selected a better player with the 4th pick in the NBA Draft last night. Westbrook fills a need for the Sonics as Luke Ridnour and Earl Watson have not stepped up. He will likely get to start right away for the Sonics as they have no illusions of making the playoffs this season. Westbrook played in 75 games (35 starts) at UCLA and he averaged 8.3 points, 2.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.0 steal per game. This was likely a reach but at least the Sonics picked for need.
